The market for self improvement books, tapes, videos, and classes these days has never been better than ever. This is a testament to the desire that many, many individuals have to be better than they presently are. This may mean quitting smoking for some, learning to be a better spouse, or even how to raise children that will succeed at life with outstanding success. The following are a few of the popular self improvement books today.
Nearly everyone has heard that teens are troubled. In fact, this has been a common condition down the ages, but in post-industrial societies the problem seems to be growing. To address this concern, John Kelly and Brian J. Karem have written a self improvement book called “Warning Signs: A Guidebook for Parents: How to Read the Early Signals of Low Self-Esteem, Addiction, and Hidden Violence in Your Kids.” Whilst the title is a mouthful, so is the information that is given. Basing some of the more serious problems of teens that is daily encountered on the nightly news, John Kelly traces the heart of these problems to low self esteem. A highly comprehensive study, this book even covers the often ignored aspects of diet and exercise as well as the vast array of teenage problems and how they may be resolved.
The Hollywood movie star Jamie Lee Curtis, while well known on the front of the TV screen has also, for some years now, been writing self improvement books for children. One of her latest efforts is “I’m Gonna Like Me: Letting Off a Little Self-Esteem.” In this lovely book, Mrs. Curtis teaches children that they can love themselves –from the perspectives of a boy and a girl who are the main characters. To add to the essence of this book, the artwork is by Laura Cornell, who also worked with Curtis on the book “Today I feel Silly and Other Moods That Make My Day.”
For a self improvement book that addresses the problems of multiple members of the family, look into “Smart Discipline: Fast, Lasting Solutions for your Peace of Mind and your Child’s Self-Esteem.” This smart book by Larry J. Koenig will not only help you to train your children in a kind yet effective manner, but will also help you to discipline yourself in the process, giving true meaning to the phrase self improvement book.
Often when we think of self improvement books, we don’t place fitness books in the same category, but when you think about it, they are similar, if not exactly the same. A fine work that will aid you not only physically, but mentally, is Bill Phillips’ “Body for Life: 12 Weeks to Mental and Physical Strength.” This book will help you to push the envelope enough to kick procrastination down and come away stronger than ever before.
Lastly, a very highly recommended self improvement book is “The True Meaning of Self Esteem,” by Robert Reasoner. This book explores the depths of what self esteem is, how it can be developed or strengthened, the negative results of a poor self esteem, and how to identify pseudo self esteem –something akin to egotism. A fine read.
