"Brain training helps struggling students develop the mental skills, confidence and motivation to break away from the back of the class," says Tanya Mitchell, LearningRx Vice President of Research and Development. "After brain training our students are often able to eliminate the need for accommodations, medications, remediation, and even special education programs. For many struggling learners, brain training may be the only way to avoid the pitfalls of being retained a grade or promoted into a higher grade when unprepared."
Hundreds of studies have examined the effects of holding back struggling students to master necessary skills and knowledge (retention) vs. promoting them to the next grade, despite poor performance, to keep them with their age-mates and friends (social promotion). In general, the studies show:
Children who are retained have no measurable long-term academic advantage over similarly performing classmates who were promoted, and many studies show repeating a grade makes students fall further behind Students who were retained at least one grade are much more likely to drop out of school. Grade retention is widely used, but reporting efforts vary drastically. According to the National Center for Education Statistics, in 2004, just 9.6 percent of American kids age 16-19 had been held back at least one grade. However, other studies indicate that number could be as high as 50 percent."For so many struggling students, weak cognitive skills are the root cause of the problem -- low achievement, poor grades and even behavior issues are simply the symptoms," says Mitchell. "LearningRx brain training strengthens those underlying mental skills and leads to a faster, smarter, more efficient brain. It's the most effective way to give kids the tools they need to succeed in school, and at grade level, for the rest of their school days. "
A review of 2009 LearningRx results shows impressive gains for students of all levels of academic abilities, including those diagnosed with dyslexia, ADHD, speech and language disorders, autism spectrum disorders and general learning disabilities. Students enrolled in a specialized LearningRx reading program gained an average of 2.9 years of reading ability in less than six months of brain training.

Ilchi Lee believes that brain education is important throughout one's life, because it can help a person reach his or her true potential. That means that one should never stop learning new things and having new experiences.
Mahlon Jones is one man who is living by this philosophy. The 71-year-old, who is retired after two serious careers, has lately picked up the guitar, according to The Times Herald-Record. He has always wanted to learn the instrument and finally has time to do so during the golden years.
"My mother and father both played guitar. I grew up in the country, and they used to play music at night," he told the publication.
He regularly takes classes at the Twin Hickory Recreation Center, where many other people his age are also working on learning new skills. Kathryn Reid, a retired schoolteacher, has started learning how to work with clay.
"It's kind of good for the soul," she explained to the news source.
Some experts believe that this kind of brain training may also be a key to staying sharp as one ages, because it creates new connections and associations in the mind.

Reverse image searching with your brain is now for real, so long as you're looking for either Josh Brolin or Marilyn Monroe and can provide your own set of intracranial electrodes. In a recent experiment, researchers hooked twelve people up to a game where they fought to display a particular image on a screen by firing the correct neurons in their brain. Though the device was only successful about two-thirds of the time, it works much more rapidly than many other brain-machine interfaces and on much more specific targets.
Brain-computer interfacing has made some impressive progress over the last few years in both humans and primates. But researchers have recently become interested in whether people are able to exert control over specific neurons in real time, to the exclusion of other neurons. This level of fine-grained control may be essential to get a computer to accomplish a task.
In the new work, scientists used twelve people who already have intracranial electrodes installed in their brains to help prevent epileptic episodes. They presented the subjects with two pictures—one of Josh Brolin, the other of Marilyn Monroe—and recorded which sets of neurons in the medial temporal lobe (MTL) fired as the subjects viewed each picture.
The subjects were then shown the two images superimposed on each other, and had to "will" the superposition to fade into a distinct Josh Brolin or Marilyn Monroe by trying to fire the relevant set of neurons. They were given between three and five seconds to complete the task.
Despite having no training in firing particular sets of neurons, the subjects were successful in forcing the image to resolve into one subject 69 percent of the time. The authors found that the subjects had slightly more success if the sets of neurons associated with each picture were in different hemispheres or regions of the brain.
The authors note that a single concept can be represented by up to one million MTL neurons, though often far fewer are required. Googling with your brain rather than your keyboard may still be a ways into the future, but we may be getting closer.

hc2d - People between the ages of 60 and 80 who play music may avoid developing Alzheimer’s disease as a result, according to a recent US study.People who had played an instrument for more than 10 years fared better overall on cognitive tests than people who had not.
Lead researcher Brenda Hanna-Pladdy, a clinical neuropsychologist at Emory University in the US, said that the number of years an individual played music was the biggest predicting factor in the study.
She said that because of the formality of musical training, the brain changed in a particular fashion when a person studied music.
People who had the highest level of musical experience (which the researchers estimated to be 10 years or more) scored higher on visuospatial memory tests than the less trained musicians and non-musicians.
The results of the study were also true even for people who had not played music for several years.
Hanna-Pladdy said there was a scientific interest in identifying activities that could help prevent age-related declines and even delay the onset of a disorder such as Alzheimer’s disease.
She said she believed that the brain might possibly create alternative pathways that would serve as backups in the event of age-related cognitive decline. Read more

By Karen Merzenich on October 27, 2010 Last week I wrote about some very healthy, happy centenarians and talked about a recent study on people aged 100+ that found some commonalities across those living long and well. Today I saw that Dr. Mark Lachs has just come out with a new book called Treat Me, Not My Age which purports to give practical advice on living into very old age while remaining healthy and active. Lachs has two basic categories of things he looks at, which I expected to be physical fitness and mental fitness. Much to my surprise, there is little mention of mental health, but rather an emphasis on creating a safer environment. I ask this question: what good is it to be 100 years old and physically fit if my mind is gone?
While it’s true that many older adults live in homes that are not best structured to support their physical conditions, and there may be appropriate fixes to make, this is exactly the kind of thinking that makes me mad. The idea that your only chance at longevity involves installing a bar in your shower or getting brighter lights in your home or turning up your hearing aid is frankly depressing, while the idea that you can consciously and purposefully engage your brain in ways that maintain and even improve your mind into older age is invigorating.
We know that that Posit Science brain training turns back the clock on your memory loss by about 10 years and improves your everyday life. We know that it improves health-related quality of life measures for up to five years after training. We know it cuts the risk of crashing your car in half. We know that it staves off depression in older people. We even know that people who train have significantly lower medical expenditures for up to 5 years post-training. We don’t know this anecdotally–although we can show you plenty of people who can tell you how it changed their life–we know it because of the dozens of controlled, randomized, rigorous scientific studies that have been conducted and published on our products.
In aging, we need everything in our arsenal: the physical fitness, the diet, the friends and family, the shower bar, and unequivocally–the brain training. So go ahead, put in brighter bulbs and turn the hearing aid up to full volume–but do know that there is much more you can do to take action and have control over your journey into older age.

Abs & Buttocks
A program designed to tone the abdomen and buttocks. Exercises include: warm-up, balance and breathing, targeted muscle toning, stretching and exercises designed to increase memory. Shape up your behind and improve your waistline.
This is a really strange video. The instructor does not speak at all. There is a narrator, and she is often off on her cuing, so it's pretty confusing. But the warm up is really great, and really loosens me up. The ab routine is pretty standard, but it's good. I just would use this video a lot if the narrator was not so awful. It was good to watch a couple times, and now I can incorporate some of the moves in while I do other videos

If you're reading this, you're probably an endorphin addict.
You've figured out that your body responds to extreme demands by pumping out hormones called "endorphins." Endorphins increase stamina, cut pain, and make you feel amazing!
But like all mind-altering substances, endorphins must be used responsibly. The endorphin-high is the cleanest, safest, healthiest, and most socially responsible way of getting high -- but there are hidden dangers.
The greatest of these is overtraining.
You probably have one sport that really turns you on. This is your passion, this is where you touch infinity.
And this is the sport most likely to injure you.
Does it matter what this sport is? Aren't sports, like distance running, inherently more dangerous? No! In fact, the most dangerous possible activity is watching television. Fat is an injury. Loss of muscle tone is an injury. Collapsed posture is an injury.
Inactivity is dangerous; we're not designed for it.
But I also know this: More people hurt themselves moving computer mice than climbing mountains. Why? Because your body is not designed for inactivity. But it's also not designed for repetitive motion, however undemanding that motion is.
Repetitive motion is also dangerous.
For most animals, this is not a problem. They do a few things extremely well. This is specialization. Horses don't climb trees. Lion's don't throw things. Dolphins don't run.
But specialization usually leads to extinction. Doing one thing extremely well means utilizing one ecological niche extremely well. That niche disappears? So does the species.
Our remote ancestors took a different path.
I want to walk you back along that path. Why? Because I want you to understand how important it is not to act overspecialized. That's not who you are. There's no use pretending. The result can be fatal.
It used to be thought that our bodies evolved in East Africa because of a drying trend. Trees died. Grasslands grew. Bipedalism became necessary. With our hand free, our brains quickly grew to make use of this new opportunity.
But it didn't happen that way.
True, around 2.5 million years ago, weather in East Africa changed dramatically. But it didn't get dry. It got dry and wet and dry and wet -- back and forth with disastrous speed. It got cold and hot and cold and hot -- zigzagging so fast that it was almost impossible to adjust. Species died out by the hundreds. Ecological niches evaporated, morphed into new niches, then vanished in turn.
The best way to survive this terrible time was to be the ultimate generalist -- a Jack of All Trades. It's as if Mother Nature lined up every member of a small troupe of early hominids and said: "OK, everybody who can't swim! Hands up! Guess what? You're all dead!" Then a short time later: "Now, hands up everybody who can't run twenty miles! You're all dead!" And so forth through a long list of activities.
Very soon, you have an animal that does a lot of things surprisingly well. We can run, swim, climb, crawl, jump, throw things, carry things -- and none of this is directly because of an increase in brain size! The body we inhabited by 2 million years ago is almost indistinguishable from the body we inhabit today.
Guided by much smaller brain than ours, this tough, flexible, highly generalized body took us out of Africa and spread our kind as far as Indonesia -- all in evolutionary blink of an eye.
Fast forward to today. Your bones and muscles serve a very different brain, but they themselves are 2 million years old. And they know something that your brain has forgotten: what they were designed for. They are happiest when they follow the old African blueprint: Do lots of things pretty well. Run, swim, climb, crawl, jump, throw things, lift things.
That's a lot like cross-training, yes?
But you really like one sport? No problem. Because of your deep evolutionary history, cross-training will improve your performance at your favorite sport.
Facing a plateau in your performance? Back off a bit. Add other activities. Your body will remember its ancient wisdom, forgive you for pretending to be what you're not, and figure out how to do everything more efficiently - including your favorite sport.
Design a program that feeds your favorite sport with a customized program of other activities. Your plateau will vanish.
And get a dog. They're great coaches.

The Federal Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) Program awarded Tennessee?s Project BRAIN its "Impacting Systems Change Award? at an annual meeting held in Bethesda, Md.
The Federal TBI Program recognized the Tennessee Department of Health / Traumatic Brain Injury Program and the Tennessee Disability Coalition for their work in establishing a partnership with a shared goal of improving educational outcomes for Tennessee students who have sustained a brain injury. They congratulated Tennessee and Project BRAIN for making a difference in successfully implementing a transition component supporting children and youth who are identified with a TBI from the hospital, return to school and into the lives with their families.
Project BRAIN (Brain Resource and Information Network) is a resource and training network for educators, families, and health care professionals who support students in Tennessee with traumatic brain injury.
"Project BRAIN has come to signify not only excellence in training, but thoughtful recognition of the needs of student and family along the continuum of care," Jean Doster, director, Tennessee Traumatic Brain Injury Program, said.
Project BRAIN offers lasting resources to lighten the load on families and at the same time raises awareness of TBI. Partnering with prominent Children?s Hospitals across Tennessee, a ?Signs & Symptoms? tool is being incorporated into the hospital discharge process. Project BRAIN has implemented a first of its kind Brain Injury Transition Liaison program. A liaison is a person who can be there for the family when a student has a diagnosis of TBI and particularly once they leave the hospital. As an effective communication link, the liaison serves as a resource bridge between hospital personnel, school personnel and families.
Paula Denslow, Tennessee Disability Coalition, Project BRAIN director, said, ?Within a hospital environment, a Brain Injury Transition Liaison provides resources and education to families of children who have a TBI. Understanding that a TBI may have long term effects, knowing about available resources is key ? accessing them when necessary is critical, a liaison connects these dots for families.?
?You've all done outstanding work: the individuals with brain injury and families are better because of your commitment and perseverance on their behalf?, said Sandy Knutson, principal research analyst, TBI Technical Resource Center, University of Chicago.
Brain fitness software company MindSparke and premium brain supplement provider Zortho join forces to provide consumers with peak brain fitness. Environmental toxins destroy brain cells and inhibit our ability to maintain a healthy brain. For optimal brain fitness and cognitive gain, MindSparke's brain training community can now enjoy Zortho's highly effective detoxifying and brain nutrition supplements.
Brooklyn, NY (PRWEB) April 19, 2011
Environmental toxins destroy healthy brain tissue and inhibit brain fitness. In response, brain fitness company MindSparke now offers brain detoxification to its brain training community.
Since 2008 MindSparke has provided advanced brain training for PC and Mac and brain training online. "We have customers from 5-years old to 85-years old," says Martin Walker, MindSparke CEO, "And the range of brain training goals is just as broad -- school, work, restoring memory loss, treating ADD -- you name it." But after a chance conversation with Zortho's Paul Reynolds Walker realized that brain training was only half of the picture. "People can't achieve peak brain fitness if they're suffering from brain toxicity," as Walker puts it, "And that's all of us to some degree."
Zortho's ZeSol proved to be the perfect answer to Walker's new concern. By providing focused nutritional support for cellular cleansing and protection ZeSol helps the body eliminate all manner of environmental toxins and poisons. Safe for children and sensitive adults, ZeSol also incorporates brain nutrition. Dihydroquercetin (DHQ), a super-nutrient, strengthens capillaries and dramatically boosts the activity of other vitamins. "Zortho's brain nutrition has been shown to produce anti-oxidant benefits up to 100 times greater than those of the Goji or Acai berry," says Reynolds.
"In England the hat-makers used to go crazy from ingesting mercury," says Walker. "But you don't need to be a mad hatter to suffer the ill effects of environmental toxins. When I started using ZeSol it was as if a fog had lifted that I didn't even know was there."
MindSparke's brain fitness programs have been featured in the New York Times, PC Mag, and FHM. Its brain training alone can dramatically boost cognition, even increasing IQ. The combination of Brain Fitness Pro and ZeSol for detoxification and brain nutrition promises to be an unbeatable brain fitness duo.

Acclaimed, National Stress Program Makes Proven Training Widely Available Through Launch ... - PRWeb
The national epidemic of stress is showing up in rising rates of anxiety, obesity, depression and sleep disturbances. Most of us reach for a pill, a cookie, a drink or the credit cards, but neuroscience is offering another solution: harness the brain's natural pathways to move through stress and back to feeling balanced and positive.
That's the approach of emotional brain training (http://www.ebt.org), a method developed at the University of California San Francisco and the Institute for Health Solutions. Until now the method has been available mainly through certified health professionals. A new EBT.ORG website launches today, making the tools more accessible to the public. A free introductory video course with the method's founder, Laurel Mellin, and free membership in the website with automated coaching and social networking will be available through October 31, 2010 to celebrate the launch.
According to Mellin, an associate professor of family and community medicine at UCSF where she and her colleagues developed EBT, "In the last 5 years, the stress levels have become more than most people using conventional tools such as relaxation and exercise can bear. We now know that recent discoveries in neuroscience offer some solutions to this stress, which health professionals say is the root cause of 80 percent of health problems.”
There are 5 levels of stress in the brain and for each level there is a different natural process back to the state of balance. EBT has codified those pathways into 5 tools that anyone can learn. You simply check in throughout the day, identify your stress level, and use the tool that gives you the easiest, quickest way to return your brain to a state of balance. And when life triggers extreme emotions, EBT gives you a safety net to manage your life and eliminate destructive habits. With time, most stress symptoms – overeating, anxiety, depression – fade, and you will have a new level of control over your life.
Mellin, a New York Times best-selling author, just released a book on EBT, Wired for Joy (Hay House, June 2010), which describes the recent innovations in the method, including rewiring the "survival drive" for overeating, distancing, merging or staying stuck in a negative mood. EBT is available nationwide through health professionals who are certified in the method. They facilitate introductory and advanced courses in EBT through groups and coaching. Many offer on-site introductions to the method. Certification in the method for health professionals is available through the non-profit Institute for Health Solutions (http://www.ebt.org).
For a free introductory online course in EBT delivered through a video e-course with the method's founder, and a one-month membership to social networking and web-based tools, visit http://www.ebt.org and register. A special seminar on food addiction is also available, with training in the use of the EBT tools to rewire circuits that fuel drives for sugary, fatty foods. Both specials are available on the EBT website through October 31, 2010.
