How to Get Your Self-Esteem Back

Self esteem is something innate. It is something that our parents and friends helped us develop when we were young and as we grow older, this is still being developed. This means that it can change and if have somehow lost your way, here are a few things that can help.

First, you have to find out what is causing your self-esteem to go down. There are no gauges or tests for this but it is pretty obvious when people look at you or when you find the time to look in the mirror.

You simply have to snap out of it because you are only human. We have to accept the fact that we are good in certain things and poor in others. If you are able to figure that out, you can focus your energy on things you know you excel in rather than wasting time on trivial matters.

Now there are people who may make fun of your limitations. They may even try to destroy you or take advantage of this weakness to hurt you so be strong and don’t let these bother you at all. It will even be better to hang out only with people that accept you for who you are in the same manner that you will accept them for their limitations.

This leads us to the next phase to get our self esteem back and that is to surround yourself with people you are comfortable with. You can even take it to the next level by telling them to recognize you for your qualities because hearing it from other people makes us feel better about ourselves.

You can do this by striking a conversation casually or by requesting for one formally. At work, employees are appraised every year and this could mean an increase in your salary or even a promotion. If you are vain, have someone conduct a survey about you and then read the results.

But do you really need someone to tell you your good qualities. Not necessarily because you already know what they are. Look at your past awards in school and in extra curricular activities. Review what you have done for the company and just think what would happen if you did not execute your plan or offer your suggestion.

Will things be different? There is always that possibility so don’t sell yourself short. If ever someone praises you for doing a good job, accept it and thank them for acknowledging your efforts.

Believe it or not, you could lose your self-esteem if someone made you feel bad and you were drawn to it. This means that it could have been avoided and the only way that can happen is if you have high self-esteem.

You should probably not have been too affected by what that person said. We all have bad days and that person probably got it but that must not get into your system. If it does, it is like getting a cold and this will spread which could also lower morale.

The truth is, you never lost your self-esteem. It was always there. This can even happen to the best of us but if we are able to overcome it, you will surely be back to your old self.

Low Self Esteem Solutions You Can Try

Feelings of low self worth have plagued so many individuals over the years. While there are those who suffer momentary bouts of low self esteem once in a while, how people perceive themselves and their worth is often an enduring idea. If you’re one of those who feel low self esteem far too often, you need not despair. Recognizing that you have a problem, after all, is one step in the right direction. Once you’ve recognized the fact that how little you value yourself is problematic, there are some low self esteem solutions that can help you in the process of beginning to develop greater love for yourself and appreciation for who you are.

First order of business, of course, is to recognize if you are simply having a chain of bad days or weeks, or are suffering from genuine feelings of low self worth. Some symptoms include withdrawing one’s self from the rest of the world, seeking to please other people at one’s own expense, feeling unhappy about one’s body and appearance (which can lead to some eating disorders), and neglecting one’s self. You may also worry a lot about what others say but put little importance on what you have to say. You may be expecting too little from yourself despite imposing impossible standards of perfection at the same time.

If these are the cocktail of feelings that you often suffer from, then the first step is to seek professional help. This is because trained professional therapists can provide an excellent avenue through which you can re-evaluate whatever negative feelings and opinions you have about yourself. This is the first step towards self acceptance and recognizing your worth as a person.

While you are working towards building your own self esteem slowly with a therapist, you will also benefit from trying to actively make choices in your various activities to inculcate a habit of self love. For instance, for every successful activity that you partake in, give yourself due credit. Make this recognition of your contribution to the cause more material by rewarding yourself. Have you scored well in an exam? Buy something you like, or eat somewhere nice to reward yourself for a job well done.

Next, eat healthy, workout, and sleep well. Keeping a healthy lifestyle is a good step in order to begin appreciating one’s body, as it is one of the steps through which you are able to gain greater appreciation of yourself. You need not be displeased about how you look, because of the fact that you are very much aware that you are taking care of yourself very well. You will also find that eating healthy, sleeping well, and working out will contribute to your having enough energy to participate better in your activities and to simply enjoy whatever happens during the day.

Whenever people ask a favour from you, first consider if this favour will involve putting other people before your needs. You need to actively ensure that your needs are first met before you go around helping other people out. This will help you recognize that while other people are important, you deserve the same attention that you shower on other people.

One of the best low self esteem solutions is to participate in activities that you like. In the process, you may discover some talent that you were unable to devote yourself to previously. Dancing, art, music, or sports can help you find a niche of specialization, as well as an avenue for self-expression.

Is building self esteem for teens different from that of a child? The answer is yes because you are grown up already and you now have the responsibility of choosing between right and wrong. You can make decisions without consulting your parents every time and as long as you have positive self esteem, you will be able to make the right decisions.

One of the challenges of being a teen is that your friends will put a lot of pressure on you. If you decide to go against them, it could hurt your friendship with them which is why they sometimes do things that they don’t normally to make sure they belong with the “in crowd.”

If you give in to pressure, you have low self esteem. What is worse is that you could hurt yourself or someone else especially if you decide to start drinking below the required age, engage in sex practices when you are not ready, get addicted to drugs, join a gang or even quit school.

When you ask an adult or and a teen what is the definition of self esteem, both will say something different. For parents, this is the way we look at ourselves but to the teen, it is how they want people to look at who they are.

As you can see, the two answers don’t match and the reason for this is the age gap. Adults have already been through a lot in life and their experience has shown them the path. On the other hand, teens are still in that period of discovery and they will most likely commit a lot of mistakes before becoming more mature in their lives.

Given that both see it differently, it does not yet excuse the parents to try and steer their sons or daughters in the correct path. The best way to do that is to be open to their teens and be around when they are needed especially when they are confused.

For instance, if the teen wants to try a new sport, the parents should wish their kids well and hope that this will work out. If it doesn’t, they should be ready to comfort them and give them credit for trying.

If the teen gets into trouble, the parents will have to correct the improper behavior. While most parents scold their kids the instant something happens, they should remember that it is more effective to them like adults because they are no longer babies. By explaining to them what they did and making them understand the repercussions of their actions, they will not make the same mistake again.

But is it just the parents who build the self esteem of the teens? The answer is no because teachers should do their share when these individuals come to school. Of course there are rules that the student must abide by but by inspiring the teens to excel in their studies, the teacher can be sure that they will succeed in college and later on in life.

After all the support from the parents, the teachers and the friends, the teen will soon realize that they will be the ones that will have to develop their self esteem. The people around merely helped the individual realize who he or she is and if they want to succeed, they have to figure out what they have to do on their own.

Self Improvement Quotes

Today we live in a world where everyone wants to improve him or herself in some fashion or other. We want to educate ourselves in how to look nicer, how to dress better, how to fr our thoughts. One expert used to tell himself every morning, and throughout the day “Every day, in every way, I get better and better.” Such thoughts or pronouncements truly will help you to change your outlook. \

With this in mind, it is important to stay positive, no matter what your more specific desires for yourself may be. Many self improvement quotes show this, in fact. Les Brown says, “Don’t let the negativity given to you by the world disempower you. Instead give to yourself that which empowers you.” Wise words indeed, in a world that can sometimes bring you down. One of the self improvement quotes from Anthony Robbins reads “If you want to be successful, find someone who has achieved the results you want and copy what they do and you’ll achieve the same results.”

While this may seem a little anti-individualistic, the advice stands to reason: find a mentor, or at least a model who has “been there and walked the walk,” as they say. Even the mighty Socrates spoke of a similar idea when he procl aimed “Employ your time in improving yourself by other men’s writings so that you shall come easily by what others have labored hard for.” To pick up from our concept of ideas aiding us, let’s now venture into words.

An unknown writer once said that “thoughts become words. Words become actions. Actions become habits. Habits become character. And character becomes your destiny.” So it is seen with self improvement quotes like this that there is a chain of events, or habits that lead to success in personal betterment. The next step then, as you’re telling yourself what to do, and watching your mentor for further clues, to vocalize it aloud, thus converting thoughts into something more substantial: “Repeat anything often enough and it will start to become you,” so says Tom Hopkins.

Next, our self improvement quotes tell us that action itself must happen. Aristotle, who the Arabic-speaking world referred to as THE philosopher for over a thousand years, wrote “We are what we repeatedly do.” This is somet hing akin to the old saying “Hell is paved with good intentions” –meaning quite simply that thoughts and spoken affirmations are only the beginning, not the end to personal progress.

With this in mind, let’s consider the last of our self improvement quotes, which comes from Theodore Martin, who said “When a man imagines, even after years of striving, that he has attained perfection, his decline begins.” This speaks of humility, which must be kept during the entire path of personal advancement. There is no point of perfection, but for the possible exception of the last second of our lives, before we step from life. Self improvement quotes are of importance to many people as they are not only easily recalled to mind, but that they are so invaluable and a fine part of Truth as a whole. May they help you, too.

Steps in Goal Setting

Goals are the end towards which effort is directed. We all have goals in our life. But have we ever actually written down our goals?

Researchers found that 90% of us never set goals. Of the 10% who actually do, only 3% have actually written them down. The latter 3% group, believe it or don't, consists of some of the most successful people in all fields of endeavor.

What Goal Setting Require of Us

1. Have a Main Goal

Have a clear perspective of what you want, what you want to be, and what you want to do.

Have a main goal that you want to reach in the near future. Doing this would make you look forward to something in your everyday life.

Don’t ever write down “I want to be successful.” This is not a valid goal. Goals should be definite and clear. For example, “by next year I would be able to buy a Toyota Altis…” Goals should be specific.

2. Construct Short-term Goals

You now have a main goal. You have a definite target.

The next step to goal setting is to divide the main goal into smaller goals so you can spread it out into a timeline. By having short-term goals you are actually avoiding yourself to a loss of interest. You are eagerly awaiting for every completion of the goals that you have written down.

It would also be easier for you to keep track of your goals. You would be able to monitor your pace and take notice of your progress. This practice would motivate you more in reaching for your goals.

3. Have a Timeline

By identifying the short-term goals required to reach the main goal, you are actually constructing a more manageable goal setting timeline.

This step to goal setting would give you a sense of control. It would monitoring your progress. A goal that is reached way before the deadline is a sure boost to self confidence.

4. Write Down the Benefits

Always write down what benefits you expect to obtain upon reaching your goals. Without these benefits, you would be clueless as to why you are trying to reach for something.

Confusion on what prize you would get in the end would mar your confidence and diminish your motivation.

5. Make it Visible

You have written down your main goal, the short-term goals, constructed a timeline and the benefits. Its now time to post it.

It must be visible to you any time of the day. It shall serve as a constant reminder that you have set a goal.

Post visual images of your goals within view or in prominent locations to make your goal setting strategy work at its best. Like in bathroom mirrors, pillow casings, the refrigerator, working area, even your car and your brief case.

6. Act on Each Goals

The next important step to goal setting is action. Each positive step you take is just another step up to the ladder.

Don’t be too harsh on yourself over miscues or minor failures. These are just part of reaching your goals. You won't get lost as long as you have clearly defined your priorities.

Common obstacles or distractions you are likely to face are lack of resources, small failures, competition, poor time management, etc.

The main problem, however, that you have to face is procrastination. Since every goal is stretched into a timeline, no action would result by lagging behind in a schedule. After sometime, you will experience loss of interest and evenually stop midway from reaching your goals.

7. Track Your Progress

The most overlooked step in goal setting is tracking progress. It feels so tiring to some people to make updates or keep tabs of their actions.

Be sure to keep in check your motivation level. After every goal that you have reached, reward yourself. You can adopt other system or style if your motivation level goes down.

Frustration usually arises from situations where people feel they have no control of.

Consider this young executive who have forgotten to prepare his sales pitch for tomorrow. He's scheduled to present to the ten top executives of a company about the latest luxury car that had arrived yesterday morning. It is already two hours past midnight. He was so tired. He is still wearing his office clothes. Two in the morning and only now that he remembers to study the car parts, engine and new gadgets. Now, he wants to point the blame to his boss for having him write the monthly report when he knew very well of his scheduled sales pitch. If only he had written it down or punched a reminder on his PocketPC.

Blame it all you want to somebody else, but the fault always lies to the person who fails to schedule and set goals and objectives.

Pitfalls in Setting Goals and Objectives

1. Where you are

Is my goal attainable where I am right now?

Know your personal circumstance and decide if a goal that you need to set is reachable. It should be attainable within the time period that you plan to construct.

2. What obstacles you have to face

Do I see a time constraint in reaching this goal? I have pending work, can I finish them on time to do this task?

After understanding your personal circumstance, identify the constraints. Make a list of them so you can attend to each item properly.

3. What strategies you can use to overcome them.

Can I make arrangements with my boss regarding my deadline? Can I set appointments? More importantly, can I delegate some of the tasks that I have just written down?

Setting goals and objectives is much like a very careful planning. A person must identify possible threats to the completion of the goal and outline strategies to counter them.

What is Often Overlooked

1. Setting of priorities

Identify your priorities in life. Most people don’t even know what or who they want to be in the future.

Take the case of the young executive. If he voiced out to his boss that the sales pitch tomorrow may get them 7 car sales, his boss might snatch from your hand the monthly report and slam it on the desk of your co-worker.

Know your priorities and assert your priorities when needed.

2. Accept Your Fears

Most people fear to set goals. Either they are afraid of their future or they just simply made a choice to enjoy the present. Usually, the former is identified as the culprit.

Fear of setting your goals too high. Fear of making a commitment. Fear of not knowing what course to tread on.

Whatever you fear, keep in mind that by setting goals and objectives, you are, step by step, moving towards your dream.

3. Goals are a Map of your Life

Most people see goals as restrictions or obstacles to their sense of freedom.

But critics should see goals the other way around.

It is a map that you made. It shows you where you are and what roads you are treading into.

You made that map. It is yours to modify according to what priorities you have set.

4. Consult your Goals

Usually, goals are set but are forgotten during the day. They need to be regularly consulted to remind yourself that they need to be accomplished. Goals will give you an idea what road to take or when it is the best time to stop.

How High is Your Self Image?

Introduction

Self image is how you see or perceive yourself in relation to others. This may refer to how you compare yourself physically with others, or may be more about how you visualize yourself, which could also be called self-concept. Your self image is very critical as it can seriously affect your self-esteem and confidence. Your self image may be altered by how people perceive or treat you, and depending on your confidence level, this affects how they relate to you. It can affect your relationships either positively or negatively.

Self image includes:

- How you consider yourself physically - How your inner personality comes across - What sort of person you think you are - What you imagine others think about you - How high you rate yourself or how much you think others rate or like you

Self-concept or self image is the inner mental picture we preserve of ourselves - it’s who we think we are and may not necessarily be true. The incredible thing is that often other people perceive us in a way that doesn’t agree with our own self image. Each of us communicates out of our self-perceived notion about ourselves.

Your own self image is composed of your natural in-born temperament and input from other people like your immediate family, instructors, friends, enemies and, most importantly, yourself. It takes some amount of time and a constant message to finally influence how a person feels about him or her “self.”

So if you want to improve your self image, first change your self-talk; those ‘petty’ thing you say or think about yourself so mercilessly like - I will never be able to do so, I may never win, etc. To modify or improve your self-image requires that other people see you as an important personality and then you provide them a consistent, credible message to them over time. Changing your self image is not effortless, and the person involved in the change must believe that improvement can occur.

Influencing Factors

A individual’s self image is the mental image, normally of a type that is quite defiant to change, that portrays not only particulars that are potentially obtainable to objective analysis by others like your weight, height, skin color, IQ etc., but also bits and pieces that have been learned by that individual, either from private experiences or by incorporating the opinions of other people.

Creating a positive self image can be a very daunting task, particularly when family members or general society uphold pessimistic evaluations about you, that happens to be imprecise. The consequences of which are not only callous for the sufferer, who may develop self-hatred, but also brutal for the society.

What is Self Improvement?

Introduction

The world today is struggling to achieve its expectations and wishes. But achieving one’s goal is not everybody’s cup of tea. There are many people around us, who strive hard to achieve what they want. Some may succeed, but some never will. The reasons behind being unsuccessful are many. Some of them could be disappointment or disbelief in oneself. The unsuccessful people look for ways to develop or improve themselves, so that eventually, they can also one day be successful and attain their goals. Self improvement comes in here. The act of improving yourself is referred to as self improvement.

Improvement can be in multiple ways - develop yourself using the methods and ways of being able to handle your life, or develop yourself spiritually and/or mentally. You should know your weakness and try becoming more able and developed by working on them. In the end, he who wins is the man who thinks he can.

Self improvement is usually based on the past. A lesson can be learned from past mistakes and the future can be more positive if the mistakes are not repeated. One needs to adopt a professional approach towards improving oneself. Many things can be achieved or improved with professionalism as it is an ongoing self improvement effort.

Ultimately, discipline and a high-level of motivation play an important part in one’s life. Everything can be overcome if you maintain these aspects. Example: stress leads to sheer frustration, which in turn results in suicide. This phenomenon has been seen time and again. Everyone is aware that sometimes circumstances are out of control, but with self improvement proper care can be taken to reshape our lives. All bad habits like smoking, drinking alcohol, and addiction to drugs can be overcome with discipline and grit determination. Everyone is not alike, and neither are problems. One may be suffering from depression; another may be having sexual problems, while yet another person may be under stress. People from all walks of life may be facing hardships in their lives. These problems are not permanent and can be easily overcome with self improvement.

In this world of cutthroat competition, people are eager to improve themselves for a better life. They try everything to get going in life. But it’s all about mental state, which is a driving force in our lives. One needs to be always optimistic with a goal of self betterment. A sustained effort toward self improvement with a single-minded approach finally works towards mental growth. One truth is prevalent. Setbacks do happen at the initial stages but hoping for the best and working single-mindedly towards the goal ultimately delivers the results. One who is confident about oneself gets ahead in every situation.

As we all know, the one who gets ahead is the one who does more than is necessary and keeps on striving. This way you are one hundred percent sure of self improvement, and you are bound to emerge as the winner.

How to Build Up Self Esteem

Is your self esteem low? Well there are ways to build it up so you don’t do anything destructive and you can do that by following these tips.

First, take a look at yourself and make an assessment. We are not all perfect. There are things that we are ashamed of and there are things that we regret doing. With that, we have to recognize our insecurities.

Once we are able to recognize our insecurities, it is time to for us to try and make it go away. The best way to do is to talk with our loved ones and friends about it. Listen to their advice and then try to resolve one issue before moving on to the next one.

If we only look at our faults, we are not giving credit to who we really are so we must also identify our strengths and successes. Think about what you are good at and then be proud of it. You could excel in a sport, play a musical instrument or have talent drawing.

For those who don’t think they don’t have any talent but would like to see where they can excel in, you should probably try out a few classes and then continue doing whichever makes you happy.

Another way you can build up your self-esteem is to be happy with what you have. A lot of times, we wish we had more money, live in a bigger house or drive a fancier car. If you are able to appreciate what you have rather than wishing for something you don’t, you will never feel incomplete or unsatisfied with how your life is right now.

Part of building your self esteem is being optimistic. This means having a positive outlook in life and never allowing others to put you down. If you let this upset you, this could bring you down even more. So just filter out the good from the bad because only you can determine what happens in your future.

You build up your self esteem every single day the moment you wake up in the morning. Once you get out of bed, look in the mirror and smile because the expression on your face tells your brain that today is going to be a great day.

If you go to work or school with a problem, don’t let other people see it because they could take advantage of it. With that, you have to learn how to fake it so everyone will think how confident you are.

This will even come in handy when you try something for the first time or want to take a gamble on something. If things don’t work out, at least you can say you tried and if you want to do it again, you can learn from your mistakes and hopefully achieve better results.

How to build up self esteem takes time so don’t expect to make a complete 180 degree of yourself overnight. Aside from focusing on yourself, you also have to be sensitive to the needs of others because you are just one person out of more than 6 billion people in this world and you have to get along with almost everyone you meet. Never try to be someone your not because people will see your true colors.

Professional Goal Setting

For people who want success in their professional life, motivation is important to develop a burning desire in creating an action plan towards a goal, and what to do to make the action plan work and achieve the goals set.

With motivation ready, professional goal setting comes next.

Goal setting is an important method of deciding what are the important things you want to achieve in life, separating and prioritizing the important from the irrelevant.

For professionals, decision making and time management are more difficult. Having a set of goals provides the necessary guidelines for making simple to complex decisions that will ultimately affect your career.

With professional goal setting, you will set goals, establish success measures and working plans.

There are programs available to help you manage productivity through a structured goal setting and planning process. These programs will advance your goal setting skills to motivate you to put your career goals into constant motion while gaining support for resources needed to accomplish them.

Areas where you need help include:

- smart decision making on hiring and reducing the number employees

- enhancing executive team performance and team building

- developing better leadership skills especially among the different division managers

- managing people more effectively through better communication

Through training programs, reading books or using your instincts and common sense in professional goal setting you will be able to improve your performance of your specific professional goals.

Learn to set goals

Set your goals while giving yourself a peaceful environment. This will allow you to brainstorm better. Start by writing everything down. Some of the things you want to do may sound initially ridiculous but they will slowly rationalize while you are doing it.

Be practical. Set goals that are measurable. In your initial list, weed out the ones that do not make sense.

If you achieve all conditions of a measurable goal, then you can feel confidence and comfort in achieving them.

If you consistently fail to meet a measurable goal, then you can adjust it or analyze the reason for failure and take appropriate action to improve your talents and skills.

Set goals that are not too easy for they do not motivate you to improve. Goals that cause the person to develop into a better individual are goals that motivate. Motivation is vital in setting goals.

Sometimes the problem with professionals in goal setting is that they set unrealistic and unmanageable goals. It is good to challenge yourself but be sure to set goals that are truly achievable through hard work, perseverance and by being smart about your career choices.

Achieving your goals Constantly refer to your professional goals setting list for guidance. Your action plan and behavior will be based entirely on it. If any of your short- or long-term goals call for a change of attitude, you should be able to motivate yourself towards the needed change. Find ways to give yourself positive reinforcement for making these changes. Reading a book or a short article in a magazine will help, among others.

When you have achieved a significant part of your lifetime goals, take time to enjoy the feeling of satisfaction that comes with it. Learn the implications of the goal achievement, and observe the progress you have made towards your bigger goals.

Do not forget to reward yourself for a job well done.

Self Improvement Month

September is self improvement month. If you’ve been considering self improvement month and have anticipated beginning a new program, exercise, or even mindset, don’t wait ‘til September! Begin in now.

The reason for this is simple. Many people see self improvement month as a marker for beginning something new and wonderful in their lives, but the reality is that every September is just another month to most people once it arrives. It is treated like New Year’s and the resolutions that we make to ourselves, only to abandon them after a few days -or a week, if we’re lucky.

Here are a few suggestions. First, forget about what month it is, just tell yourself that this month will be your own personal self improvement month, and that you’re going to make the changes that you need in your life every month. Next, write your goals down on paper. This might sound silly, even a waste of time, but the most successful people throughout history have done this. Why is it so successful? The fact is that while thoughts are helpful, they’re only half a step towards accomplishment.

Once you write something down –a goal, for instance, you make it “real” in the sense that you can now see it, add more information to it if you like, or even realize that maybe it’s a bit too lofty, unattainable, whatever. Once any idea hits paper, it takes on a feel of something more akin to truth, and this is a full step –your first, towards accomplishment.

Now everyone has different goals in their lives. Many of these are emotional based, whereas others are towards material attainment. There is not enough time or space, for the purposes of this article, to cover every possible problem. For this reason, the problems will be kept to generalities for the most part.

Confidence is one of the great overall problems that people seek to ameliorate. As this is your self improvement month, let’s start with that. Do you feel that others are more fortunate than you, or that they are favored by other people more greatly than you, even though you’ve tried your hardest? If so, you have a definite dissatisfaction.

Are you afraid to be yourself? Do you feel you must say things that really aren’t from your heart, that maybe even make you feel ashamed to say them, though you feel that you’re somehow obliged to say these things? Is this true with your actions? Do you dress to impress yet feel like a “fake” all of the time? Of course it should be realized that we all experience this at some points in our lives, but if this is an almost daily occurrence then it may truly be a problem.

Are you afraid to speak up for yourself, even though you know you’ll be hurt if you don’t say something? Can you “put your finger” on why you are so reticent to speak up for yourself?

The fact is that all of these are very common problems, and all of them are amendable. For some people the answer may come as an epiphany, in a flash of inspiration that helps them to turn their lives around. For others, it may take years. It is suggested that you get to writing down your problems and solutions that you think may work. Then discuss this with some close friends, who often may know you better than you know yourself. Act on these findings and if a viable solution is not attained at this point, start investing in some self improvement books. They need not be new, even, as some of the best books in this field are half a century old (cf. Dale Carnegie).

The point is that you try to make your world better, and this is at the heart of any form of success. The Chinese have a saying that goes, it is not shameful to fall and get up and try again. The only shame is if you fall and then are too afraid to again rise. Rise up, every day, for every day is a day in self improvement month, and every day you get better.

Why Other People are the Causes of Low Self Esteem

Newborn babies have no self esteem problems. They have no concept of failure or falling short of expectations. In a very real sense, our interactions with other people are the root causes of low self esteem. Since you cannot avoid interacting with people, you have to learn how to identify these causes and stop them from affecting you.

Low Self Esteem From The People You Know

Parents lay the foundation for self image. Children understand that parents expect certain things of them, and if they fail these expectations, it can decrease their sense of self worth. It is important for parents to realize the limits to which they can push their offspring to excellence. You cannot change your past, and you cannot blame your parents for wanting you to succeed, but what you can change is the way you look at it. Acknowledge the love, learn to set aside the disappointment, and move on.

Your partner also has certain expectations regarding your relationship, so it is important that these expectations are verbalized. Constant dialogue is important as there can be no greater blow to self image that being though of as falling short of an ideal that you do not even know about. The same principle can be applied to relationships with friends and relatives. Be sure that you can clarify your role and understand what they expect of you.

Work relationships are at once both easier and harder on self image. On one hand, your job description makes the expectations of the people in the workplace crystal clear. On the other hand, this clarity also makes in easier to point out your shortcomings. What is important in this situation is to realize that a job is an opportunity for growth. If you do no have the required skills yet, identify them so you can acquire them and meet your goals.

Low Self Esteem From The People You Don’t Know

The opinions of total strangers affect all of us to a certain degree. These perceptions may reach your in many different ways. You may overhear comments of people as you walk down the street. You may read comments about you written in blogs or articles. You may identify with certain groups that are discussed in the media, such as on TV or in magazine articles.

Judgments from people who do not know you can sometimes be more devastating than from those close to you. You may feel unfairly judged or belittled. Worse, you may even partially agree to these negative pronouncements. This can push your self image even lower. What is important is to identify the feeling and examine its cause. If you cannot dispute a negative observation yourself, look for positive affirmation. People who know you can help you set these things into perspective. Many resources both online and in print can prove these judgments wrong. You may want to avoid magazines or TV shows that make frequent erroneous pronouncements.

As you can see, our perception of failing other people’s expectations is the seed from which poor self image sprouts. These causes of low self esteem are ubiquitous and unavoidable so you must learn to guard against them if you want to grow. Learning to deal with other people in a positive way is the one sure path to confidence and a good self image.

We lose a part of ourselves when something tragic happens. This could be the loss of a loved one, a painful divorce or losing your job. You may feel that there is no point in living but if you are able to rebuild your self-esteem, you can continue living your life.

After a period of time, you start rebuilding your self esteem by first learning to let go. Along the way, the event which struck you the most will haunt you and it is okay to cry and feel angry. Once you have released this out of your system, it is time to open your eyes and accept the fact that it has happened.

When you are ready, try doing things that make you feel good. Perhaps get a new haircut, go on a long vacation, take a new class or start a business. You need a new environment so reach out to the world. By doing this on your own or with friends, you will be able to begin enjoying life again instead of imprisoning yourself in your own home.

If what happened was a messy divorce, just think that you now have all the time in the world to do things that your spouse did not allow you to do before. If someone close died, remember them for who they are and cherish whoever is still living. Should you lose your job like many are experiencing right now, look for work or try out classes because there are certain fields that are not affected that much by the financial crisis.

In order to achieve that, you must remember that you have something locked inside which is very powerful and that is the belief in yourself. Yes you made some mistakes but if you learn to forgive yourself, you will soon have a change in attitude and a different outlook in life.

People who have known you in the past will surely take notice of it and some who were not close to you before will be more than willing to approach and want to know more about you.

But this will not work until you are able to understand what you feel hurt and what you need to be happy again. One of the things that enrich self-esteem is the fact that you learn to love yourself so you have to find it because this is what will guide you to a goal and at least achievement.

There is a saying that goes, “ what hurts you will only make you stronger” and this statement is true because although one chapter in your life has closed, the next one is about to open. Sometimes we need to fall down real hard before we can get up ahead but this too shall pass.

You may be bruised or see a scar but you are still living and breathing so stop wasting your time sulking when there is so much to do in life. What happened yesterday is over and a new day is here. This is a chance for you to live again so seize the day!

Remember, you never lost your self-esteem. It was there the whole time and you just need to stand up, dust off the dirt and get the feeling again.
